an obsession begins?

I was looking for something that I could build within our garage, used a reasonably sized outboard (>40hp), and had the classical styling of a wooden runabout.
I found it – the Malahini

the origin of an idea…

Following the boat building class, I have began to daydream about building my own day sailer. How big? What style? A rowing skiff that could also sail?
I want something that I could use alone and as well as with my wife. I would also like it if she could use it by herself if she wanted. After much thrashing about I recall that she had expressed interest in having a small powerboat…could I build one of these?
Suddenly an image of a wooden runabout popped into my head and hasn’t left since. I hunted around the web trying to figure out if ameturs could build wooden runabouts and how they went about it. I’ve recently I stumbled across the Glen-L Boat Design website and have been dreaming that someone like me might be able to build something really nice…

a bit of background…

Filed under: Ranger - the beginning — keith @ 22:52

Last Fall I had decided, somewhat on a lark, that I would take a boat building course to learn something new. I had run across the Center for the Wooden Boat and found a course on offer entitled “Lapstrake Boat Building.” In fact, it was a set of courses that went through the process of lofting the boat, building the boat, and building the sailing rig for the boat. I plunked down my entire boat budget, which had been painfully set aside for a new day sailer.
The course was taught by the master shipwright Rich Kolin, using the techniques found in his book Building Catherine: Traditional Boat Bulding Made Easy. We built his Ranger, a 101/2 cedar lapstrake skiff based upon the Columbia lifeboat. You can see more here .
In addition to the boat building techniques, I learned two things;

  • a shipwright can fix most any error that a student can make
  • given a good plan, enough time, and patience – I could build a boat
  • I’ll fill in this discussion as I have time
