I went ahead and got the fiberglass kit and the encapsulation kit for the Malahini…I guess waiting a week or so made it a bit easier to part with the $$$. This will all likely arrive after Christmas – a slightly late present to myself.

spend like a drunken…well, boat builder

So, I ordered the frame-kit for the Malahini, along with the silicon bronze fastener kit. After looking at the plans for the frames I decided that I would take advantage of Glen-L’s expertise and get these done properly….too many variables makes me a bit nervous. As to the fasteners, my hunting around suggests that I could, in principle, get better pricing – but only if I bought the hardware by the ton!
I haven’t decided on the fiberglassing kit or whether or not I’m going to encapsulate everything yet…who am I kidding? I’m just being slow to part with my cash…

research

I ordered Boatbuilding with Plywood by Glen L. Witt and a set of plans for the Malahini. The book was a very interesting and informative read. (It was gratefying to find that a number of the techniques I had learned in building the lapstrake skiff were also used in plywood construction.) The overall process was set up in a detailed step by step manner which seemed to make the building of a boat an organized series of modest steps almost all of which I could image myself undertaking.
The plans were given on five full-sized drafting pages accompanied by a detailed work plan that discussed the particular steps in the construction of the Malahini. I enjoyed diving into the plans and comparing information until I had a reasonably clear picture of the process. Yes, I could do this. I’m going to do it.
